How did you find your internship?

IPE

Internship Description:

I designed a deep learning architecture to accurately correlate manufacturing defects opened at quality gates to specific workplaces that cause defects in real-time, realizing dynamic and intelligent quality control. I spent two and a half month as a full-time intern. I worked closely with other 7 UMich interns, and all employees in the WCM development office, especially with Francesco and Vincent.

Skills Demonstration:

-Designed a deep learning architecture to accurately correlate manufacturing defects opened at quality gates to specific workplaces that cause defects in real-time, realizing dynamic and intelligent quality control

-Proposed a new process capability index which can reflect robustness of labor intensive assembling activities; prepared and presented executive document to FCA EMEA manufacturing division vice president

Skills Gained:

Technically, I have a better understanding of the concept of world class manufacturing. I cultivated my machine learning and advanced data analysis skills while I was conducting my assigned project via KNIME. By visiting the shop floor where Levante is manufactured from raw material, I gained better understanding of how a premium vehicle is manufactured. Socially, I learned how to voluntarily ask questions, how to be active in all kinds of professional meetings, how to collaborate with peers and supervisors, and how to involve in local social activities as a normal and local employee.

Advice for Engineering Students:

1. Be sure to ask questions voluntarily. Everyone in a big company is busy and normally only when you ask questions voluntarily, they notice you are in trouble and then are willing to help.

2. Have to have a correct expectation. You cannot always ask your supervisor to spend most of his or her time on you, so plan everything in advance (i.e. schedule meetings, asking for resources, asking for help, etc.), and try to be more independent.

Memorable Moment/Challenging Situation:

The most memorable moment is when I finished my algorithm and it worked out perfectly when I was reviewing it with Francesco. The most challenging situation is when I asked for an important set of data, but I waited almost two weeks to get them.

Best Part of Your Experience:

I had a better understanding of what industry 4.0 is, and because of this, I have somewhat pivoted my career planning in the future.
